Fondly remembering a deflationary China

IN THE wake of the recent political debate over the effect of NAFTA on American economic prospects, a number of commentators pointed out that much of the job loss associated with trade has come not from Latin America, but from China. Indeed, in the broader discussion about growing income inequality, China is generally assigned a prominent role, given massive growth in imports of cheap goods from that country.

Federal rebates

There is a counter-argument, however, that cheap Chinese goods have also made life easier for lower-income Americans. Today, Tyler Cowen directs us to a new paper on that very subject, which notes that inflation rates differ across income groups. Once low inflation rates for goods consumed by the poor are taken into account, inequality figures for the population as a whole look quite different.

It’s an interesting result, but it’s also one which would have looked far more compelling two or three years ago. It certainly seems as though the primary effect of Chinese development on prices is no longer deflationary but strongly inflationary, as Chinese demand pushes up prices for food and energy. And just as the poor spent a larger proportion of their income than the rich on cheap Chinese non-durables, so too do the poor spend a larger proportion of their income on necessities, which have become quite a bit more expensive of late.

This recent trend reversal provides an important lens through which to properly view the effect of Chinese development on the poor in America. There can be no doubt that in the long-run, Chinese economic growth will be good for the economic prospects of lower-income workers. Growth in global consumption demand will improve the outlook for American export industries, and economic development will ultimately raise Chinese wages, eliminating whatever downward pressure Chinese production has placed on American incomes.

The challenge will be to accommodate the resource pressure posed by such increased global demand. And unfortunately, that pressure may well generate anti-trade sentiment just as downward price pressure did previously. We have seen that the first inclination of many governments, given soaring food prices, is to curtail exports. That answer reduces the benefits of specialisation and is incredibly damaging to food importers. Ultimately, trade in such goods will ensure that food production is done in a productive manner, and it will help the world hedge against localised shortages.

Trade has delivered prosperity to millions in Asia, setting the stage for new growth in developed nations, as well. We should recognise that trade is also our best weapon against the price spikes that have been the natural consequence of that prosperity.

Chicago Bears Mock Draft Game

Today we’re giving out a nice little prize: a weekly column all summer long. “How do I win such an honor, Jeff?” you ask nearly wetting yourself at your computer. Here’s how the game works:

1. This column will stay up for the duration of the week. You use the comments sections to predict the POSITION and PLAYER the Bears will select with each of their picks in the upcoming draft. I will compile the picks and put them on the main page Friday night.

2. Your predictions must be made in CAPS. The conversation and debate will go on as it regularly does but I’m looking at everything in CAPS as predictions. ONE PREDICTION PER PERSON. ALSO! ALSO! ALSO! Please email your picks to dabears@dabearsblog.com before Friday with the subject heading “Draft Picks.” This will ensure you are who we think you are.

3. Each pick is designated a certain number of points. You get half those points for getting the position right and the other half for getting the player. The most points you can earn is 440.

Round One (14th overall) is worth 10 pts. Round Two (44th overall) is worth 20 pts. Round Three (70th overall) is worth 30 pts. Round Three (90th overall) is worth 40 pts. Round Four (110th overall) is worth 50 pts. Round Five (142nd overall) is worth 60 pts. Round Six (175th overall) is worth 70 pts. Round Seven (222nd overall) is worth 80 pts. Round Seven (243rd overall) is worth 80 pts.

4. The weekly column will be the first week in June run right through the end of training camp. You’ll get a chance to weigh-in on the quarterback derby and whatever else you might find interesting. We’ll work out the details. If you’re not a regular here and you’ve just come to the website, don’t worry about it. We’re an open forum and you’re welcome to win this thing.

i guess i would have to sight it in order to understand what they’re talking upon in this movie… are they trying to crack id back into classrooms as valid science? looks like someone needs to review the scientific method. isn’t it just heartbroken when scientists have to watch their words so closely though? whether they’re for or against id? reading some of those interviews with scientists, you’d make up they were being grilled by the police- or by the media- whichever is worse. (btw, i could get happily gone the rest of my life without seeing ben stein in shorts!)

Beginning on the afternoon of April 23, MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN aired a controversial ad by the North Carolina Republican Party attacking Sen. Barack Obama and Democratic gubernatorial candidates Beverly Perdue and Richard Moore at least 22 times combined, in most cases also noting that Sen. John McCain denounced the ad. As MSNBC political analyst Rachel Maddow and other media figures on MSNBC and CNN pointed out, the repeated broadcasts benefit the North Carolina Republican Party, which does not have to pay for them, and presumably benefit McCain, even as he is credited with taking the high road for criticizing the ad.

Indeed, according to an April 24 New York Times article, there had yet to be an airing of the ad paid for by the North Carolina Republican Party. The Times reported: “Republican officials in North Carolina said [the ad] would make its debut during the [April 24] 6 p.m. newscasts.”

As Media Matters for America noted, MSNBC also gave another ad attacking Obama free publicity. On the April 24 edition of MSNBC Live, while airing video of that ad, created by Floyd Brown, Contessa Brewer said, “Well, here’s the catch: Brown does not have a single ad buy in any TV market. Instead of paying for airtime, he just announces this in a press release for outlets like YouTube to pick up.” Brewer did not note the irony of her and MSNBC’s giving the ad free airtime while reporting that the producer was hoping for free airtime, although guest Craig Gordon, Newsday Washington bureau chief, made the point: “[W]e’re talking about it here today, so he probably accomplished what he hoped to accomplish.”
