The 279 students of Wellesley High School Class of 2008 may well remember their big day as much for its stories as its pomp and circumstance.
In his speech, Principal Andrew Keough included a personal story from his childhood. Disobeying their mother’s strict rules, he and his sister left their house and walked along the train tracks to go buy candy downtown. A few minutes into the adventure, they heard a train and were terrified. Eventually, “an engine pulling only a few cars” went by and they “barely felt a breeze,” from their spot in the woods, he said. Yet their mother — trying to keep the children from venturing out while their parents were at work — had warned them they might get “sucked under” the train, as a relative supposedly had during the Depression.

Keough, who thanked the students for shaping his life in his debut year at WHS, said he shared the story for several reasons, one being that he was “amazed at how impressionable we were and how easily we were able to be misled. Also, he said, the memory “helps me to remember that I’m human and that when I really think I have all of the answers, chances are another humbling experience is coming my way.”

Reminding the students that “life is not always what it appears to be,” he encouraged them to “trust their instincts” and not settle for what they have heard or have been told.
Class valedictorian Kelsey Woerner spoke somewhat along those lines as she encouraged her classmates to define their own success and to create their own versions of happiness.
Alluding to growing up in a “star society,” with emphasis on displaying “Ivy League decals” and the pursuit of “the glitz of America’s Next Top Model,” she offered that society thrives in “meaningless prestige” and forced definitions of what success is.

“I hope you find paths you love to pursue,” said Woerner, who is headed to Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. “But if you do not — because not all of us will — remember this: You can create purpose. You can develop meaning. You can learn to love.”
Languages teacher Richard Deppe delivered the message from the faculty and emphasized courage.

“Is it not an act of courage to present ourselves as we really are?” he said. Citing his own path, as he “disclosed his sexual orientation to friends, family and later to students, it’s the little acts of courage that help win for you your own dignity.”
Students gave Deppe a standing ovation when he finished speaking.
Superintendent Bella Wong elaborated on the basic core values that guide the Wellesley School system: “Academic excellence, Cooperative and caring relationships, Respect for human differences, and Commitment to community.”
“Keep on exploring and challenging yourself to determine where your passions might lie,” she said. “Reach out. We are all better off if there is less suffering, less want, less conflict.”
She encouraged the graduates to pursue excellence that is “cooperative” and “allows us to embrace and work with ideas that are different from our own,” which, in turn, will contribute to building “a community that reflects shared values and vision for better relationships and a more productive society.”
School Committee Chairman Michael Young invited the graduates to think of June 6, 2033, 25 years into the future: “You and your contemporaries will be assuming leadership roles in our government, businesses, education, medicine, arts and other fields,” he said. “We will need your thoughtful leadership.”
Given the rainy days preceding graduation, the students had contemplated an indoor celebration, as many before them have done, but at the end, the principal opted to stay outdoors.
“The kids were so excited when they heard it, when we announced during rehearsal this morning,” said Keough. “They like it because all their relatives can attend.”
Several graduates said that the location makes a big difference.
“It’s much better outside because we’re all in our own home field,” said Caroline Dugan, who is going to Rollins College in Florida.
“It was a wonderful end for a wonderful four years of high school,” said Caroline Morgan, who plans to attend Tulane University in New Orleans. “I’m g …
